Pancake Day or Shrove Tuesday is a time honoured tradition and nothing beats a menu decked up with all the pancakes you can handle. Even better, I love photographing them all and bringing the day to life. This year, I went back to The Pear Tree in South London to capture their pancake week menu – because they’ve got so many options, a day was simply not enough!
Photographing Pancake Day joy
Pancake enthusiasts rejoice – Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day is just around the corner on the 13th of February. If you’re giving your spatulas a rest, you can head to a London restaurant doing the day proud. Even better, you can head to a restaurant that’s extending their menu to a whole week. The Pear Tree at Greenland Place is doing just that – turning Pancake Day to Pancake Week! With sweet, savoury and sweet & savoury options, their pancake menu was a true joy to shoot.
The brief
The shoot had two main focuses:
- Social first content
- Imagery for Deliveroo and other booking platforms
Social first photography for Pancake Day
With photography geared towards social platforms, I like to shoot in portrait and focus on full tables and action shots. These are some of my favourite photos from the day.
Deliveroo food photography
On the contrary, I shoot all dishes for delivery platforms in landscape, with no other dishes around, to adhere to the requirements.
Previous Pancake Day photoshoots
As with all special dates, it’s a good idea to refresh content every year to showcase current dishes.

The nitty-gritty
The half day shoot took place at the restaurant in January 2024.
I used a Sony a7iii camera, with a 24-70mm and a 90mm lens, with a Godox softbox strobe light.
